Water Conductivity and the Life of Component Parts

The conductivity of the water may affect the operation of the QEnergySpa. In order to operate, the conductivity needs to be within a certain range. Illustrated below are suggestions of actions that may be taken, in the event that your water is outside of this range.

When water conductivity is insufficient

If, when you turn the system on, no lights appear on the “Activity Level” display (Models 3100 and 2500) or if the “Action” light when illuminated, display “Lo” (Model 4105), this indicates insufficient conductivity in the water. Following the steps below should identify and rectify this problem:

  1. Check all connections between the Power Supply and the Orb to ensure that they are not corroded and are correctly connected.
  2. Check that the cable connector is making proper contact with the eyelet of the positive track and the brass rod which is protruding from the top of the Orb shell.
  3. Inspect the positive Rings and Track within the Orb for excessive wear and replace when visibly pitted and worn.
  4. Check the setting of the ‘Power Level Selector’ (Models 3100 and 2500); it may be set at the lowest of its three settings. Try adjusting the toggle switch of the ‘Power Level Selector’ on the front of the unit to a higher setting (e.g. “Med” or “High”). This can be done by pushing the toggle switch from left to right, illuminating more lights on the display panel.
  5. If the first four (4) steps did not isolate the problem, the conductivity of your water may be too low. To remedy this you can:

Dissolve 100 grams (4 ounces) of pure salt (Sea Salt or Rock Salt) into 500 ml (1 pint) of hot water. Store this 'conductive agent' in a re-sealable bottle or container for easy use. One teaspoon of 'conductive agent' per 15 litre tub is normally equivalent to one extra light on the display panel.


Bore water is highly conductive and may be used as an alternative 'conductive agent'.

Note: Using 'conductive agent' usually results in increased discolouration and sedimentation at the end of the session.

If undiluted salt is used, add no more than ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt to your water for optimal activity reading on the display. Ensure that you mix well before having session. More salt added than the above mentioned limit will wear the Orb components prematurely. To prevent premature wearing, minimal 'conductive agent' should be added so that the Models 2500 and 3100 shows 2 - 3 lights, plus the systems light (on the highest setting). For the 4105 Model a reading between 20 and 30 is ideal. Exact readings are not essential.

Note: When adding conductive agent, it is not necessary to have a maximum reading on the display and will not improve the efficiency of the unit. As long as effervescence is visibly emitted from the Orb, it will function and produce the results as designed.


When water conductivity is excessive

In the event that the available water is too conductive; tank water, distilled or reverse osmosis water can be added.

Before diluting, please check the setting of the ‘Power Level Selector’ (Model 3100 and 2500). It may be set too high. Adjust the ‘Power Level Selector’ to a lower setting.

When to replace Rings, Track and Orb Cable

Regularly inspect the Rings and Track within the orb. Replace the Rings and Track when visibly pitted and or worn or when the edges or thickness have been visibly affected. Note that the more corroded the Rings and Tracks become, the less effective they are. In the picture above, the second ring and track is at the stage at which we recommend that they should be replaced.

The second cable connector (Mohawk) from the left in the image shown, may require replacement. You should consider ordering a new cable at this stage. Don’t be tempted to add more 'conductive agent' at this stage in order to get the required conductivity. If the connections are not adequate, the unit will not function correctly and will decrease the life of the Orb considerably.


Factors affecting the lifespan of the Orb

The Rings and Tracks generally last 7 to 20 Sessions. The Orb and Cable are considered consumables and has a limited lifespan. The factors affecting the lifespan include:

  1. The frequency of use.
  2. The water source; bore, tank or tap water. All these sources are continually changing conductivity. For example your local water authorities are testing water supplies daily and adding the required chemicals depending on their results. Tank water changes depending on pollution levels.
  3. Whether a 'conductive agent' has been added and what type. Potassium Citrate (Food Grade) causes less wear on the Rings and Track compared to salt. Adding more 'conductive agent' when not required, due to insufficient connections, will cause premature degradation of the Orb.
  4. Length of time in cleaning solution. Soak Orb components in solution for a minimum amount of time.
  5. Running the unit at higher settings may degrade the Rings and Track prematurely.
  6. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, altitude, proximity to radio/micro waves, other power sources, geographical and geological factors will affect the lifespan of the Orb while it is running.
  7. The person having the session with the QEnergySpa.
How to maximise the lifespan of your Orb, Cable and Power Supply

Regularly, inspect the connections on the inside of the cable connector (the Mohawk) for oxidation and wear. Replace the Cable when visibly corroded and pitted. The more corroded the stainless steel cable connectors are, the softer they become and hence the more likely they are to drop back and rest on the plastic. This can be remedied by inserting a small flat head screw driver or handle of a teaspoon behind the plate and while holding the point where the connector is attached, easing it forward. Only recommended as a last resort before ordering a replacement cable.

  1. Run your unit at the recommended activity level.
  2. Only add conductive agent when absolutely necessary and then just enough in order for the unit to operate. Please note that after just one session with too much conductive agent added, the life of the Orb and cable will deteriorate rapidly.
  3. When cleaning, soak metal components to remove lime, rust and or scale. However, keep the time in the cleaning solution to a minimum.
  4. Never polish or buff the Rings and Track, or centre module with any product.
  5. Never subject the Orb or Cable Connector to water temperatures higher than bearable to your skin. Do NOT clean the Orb in boiling water, a Dishwasher or Autoclave.
  6. Never file components in order to clean them. You may use a soft tooth brush or a soft plastic kitchen scour.  Never scratch or dent the surfaces.
  7. Always use the supplied carry bag for storage and transportation to avoid possible damage. Store in a dry, clean place. Be sure to unplug the Cable from the Power Supply when not in use.
  8. Place unit away from foot traffic and other hazards while in use.
How to maintain good connections

Inspect the Orb connections on a regular basis.

  1. Pay particular attention to the pins located in the Cable Plug that attaches to the Power Supply. Ensure they have not been corroded, bent or broken.
  2. When the Cable is attached to the Orb, view through the side of the Mohawk to ensure firm connections with the Brass Rod protruding through the top of the Orb shell and the eyelet of the Positive Track on the side of the Orb. Also ensure that you keep these connections clean and free from corrosion.
  3. Ensure that the Positive Track makes good connection with the Positive Rings.
  4. For maximum efficiency, ensure that the Negative Copper Track (not the Copper Ring) connecting the two Negative Rings that form part of the Centre Module, is sitting opposite the Positive Track. Refer to Step 4 of the Orb assembly guide.
  5. Ensure that the Top and Bottom Buttons are intact and firmly attached to the Brass Rods. If not, replace.
